American Water Spaniel

History

The American Water Spaniel is one of the few breeds that were developed in the United States.  This rare breed is thought to of originated in the Fox River and Wolf River Valleys of Wisconsin in the mid to late 1800’s.  There is no formal record as to the specific breeds that were used to develop the American Water Spaniel but, it is believed that the extinct English Water Spaniel, Field Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Tweed Spaniel, and possibly the Chesapeake Bay Retriever all played a part in its existence.  The person credited with obtaining recognition for the breed is Doctor Pfiefer of New London, Wisconsin.  Through his efforts the breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1920, the Field Dog Stud Book in 1938 and the American Kennel Club in 1940.  At this time the most knowledgeable source about the breed is the American Water Spaniel Club, Inc.  The AWSC is the AKC parent club for the breed and it was founded in 1985.

Hunting

The American Water Spaniel was developed by hunters during the market hunting days of American history.  Hunters needed a dog that was versatile enough to work on land as well as on the water.  Another great benefit to the hunters of this time was the medium size of the dog.  It took up very little space as it could easily fit in a canoe to hunt marshes and tidal waters.  The AWS is an intelligent hunter that has been breed to think on its own while in hunting situations.  This dual purpose dog is an outstanding upland flusher which usually has a naturally instinctive quartering pattern.  However, the American Water Spaniel truly excels on the water and is regularly used to retrieve ducks and geese.

 Temperament

The breed is as comfortable in the home as they are in the field.  They make great companion dogs that are friendly, intelligent, and very trainable.  Therefore, the American Water Spaniel fits into a family setting easily and is good with children.  They are dedicated to their owner and really enjoy working with them in a variety of activities which include:  confirmation, hunting, hunt tests, rally, agility, obedience, and tracking.

As reputable and responsible breeders, one of our top priorities is to develop healthy puppies!!  All of our American Water Spaniels that are used for breeding receive health clearance.  We currently obtain clearances from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for hips and heart as well as an eye clearance from the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF).  Through this process, we feel comfortable in offering and providing all puppy buyers with a written health guarantee covering these health standards.
